Announcements the week of August 27, 2007

Band Night

An "all-hands" parent meeting is scheduled for this Thursday, August 30th at 7 pm in the Cario gym. Come get an overview of our program for the year, turn in your required forms, get your medical forms notarized, check on your band fees and make payments, check out volunteer opportunities and sign up. In addition, the handbook will be distributed, binder bundles will be available to purchase, CDs distributed (if you bought one last May), and much more!

Binder Bundles

The binder bundle will consist of the required black three-ring binder, 10 sheet protectors, and music books. The sixth and seventh grade bundles will include two music books - Alfred's Essentials of Music and The Essential Elements. The eighth grade bundles will include Alfred's Essentials Book 2. The costs for the bundles will be - 6th grade, $19; 7th grade, $16; 8th grade, $10. For those students that don't need the binder, some individual books will be available for sale.

Forms

You child should have brought home five (5) forms from band class (check both sides). These forms need to be completed and brought with you to band night on Thursday. If you have not seen them, they are also available online. One form is the emergency medical form that needs to be notarized. If you can get it notarized ahead of time, that's great. If not, notaries will be available so be sure to hold off on signing the form. There is one form that gets signed once you have read the handbook. The handbook is available on the website to read in advance and the hard copy will be passed out tomorrow. The other forms are self-explanatory.

Band Fees

The band fees for this year will remain at$175. The band fee deposit of $25 is due by band night. This portion of the fee is non-refundable. The remaining balance can be paid in full, or in three monthly payments of $50, with the first one due on September 20th.

Please note that there are several opportunities for fundraising in the fall and spring where a large portion of the profits can be put into student accounts and applied to band fees (and trips, etc). The first fundraiser to benefit student accounts will be a pie and fruit sale starting in October. It is very possible to fundraise most, if not all of the band fees.

SmartMusic Subscriptions

Mr. Scott is requiring an at-home, computer-based practice system for students that have computers. School-sponsored home subscriptions can be purchased for $25/year from www.smartmusic.com. Instructions for ordering over the Internet can be found on the website under Handbook and Parent Information. Click on the 'SmartMusic Subscription' button on the left menu. The code for Cario is "cariobands".

Beach Sweep

Our band students will have the opportunity to come together for a good cause and participate in the South Carolina beach sweep on September 15th from 9am to 12 pm. More details will be discussed at the band night meeting.

Applebees breakfast

Sixth grade band students (as well as other new students) and their families are invited to a pancake breakfast at Applebees on September 8th. There is no charge for this event - the purpose is to get to know other families and band parents. Several board members and "experienced" band parents will be available to answer any questions you personally have about the band experience. There will be three seating times at 8am, 8:30am, and 9:00 am in order to accommodate as many people as possible. More about this new event at the band meeting.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers will be needed next week on Tuesday and Wednesday from 4 - 6 pm for the 6th grade fast start clinics. Volunteers will help direct students to the appropriate areas based on instrument and monitor the halls and classrooms and help the clinicians as needed. If you are interested in helping, please write to volunteer@cariobands.org.

BoxTops 4 Education

We are continuing our BoxTops 4 Education collection this year. The Box Tops 4 Education program is easy money for the Band! Just clip and save them...everybody grocery shops, and those little $.10 box tops really add up when 325+ families get involved! Just put your BoxTops in a Ziploc bag or envelope, and send them in to the band room. There is a box specifically designated for box tops in the band room.

Campbell's Labels

While you are clipping box tops, go ahead and save those Campbell's labels as well. They can be sent in to the same box in the band room.

Ink Cartridges

The band will be collecting ink cartridges again this year. Please have your child drop off the ink cartridge in the box in the band room. In your child's best interest, it would be helpful if the cartridge were put into a ziploc as they can leak.

See you all tomorrow evening!!
